"Mommy"
by Eileen L. McGondel, 2000

The six year-old's eyes were sparkling that day,
Her chubby hand tightly clutching
the flowers she'd picked along the way.
Her daddy guides the child to the main entrance door,
Giddily she skips along the shiny hospital floor.
Room 202 is where her Mommy resided that year'
The child was unaware of all her daddy's fear.
Months before her Mom was such a beautiful sight,
but it was all taken away by,
a drunken driver one fateful night...
The girl wondered when, her Mom would awake,
The Daddy kept silent, for his little girl's sake.
She placed the flowers in a small, blue vase,
Then kissed her Mommy on her sleeping face.
her Dad took her hand, they walked silently away,
She was unaware of the events that had happened,
on a year ago that day.
Her innocent eyes asked when Mom would return home,
but her daddy knew...that day would never come.
